The Wizard's Duel

While on O'Neill Family Vacation, we all went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (henceforth known by it's twitter handle HP7p2). Afterward, my dear brother the JakeMonster and my nephew Matthew were having their Wizard's Duel.

"Erin, can you put it in the photo editor and make everything sparks?" the JakeMonster asked.

"Yes," Erin replied.

"Can it be huge? And can you make it like in the movie? And can you put us in the bubble like in the fourth movie."

"Anything you want, JakeMonster."

FSOT DAY!

I've been preparing to take the Foreign Service Officer Test since February. The FSOT is the first of many steps in becoming a career U.S. diplomat working in foreign embassies for the Department of State. It sounds like a wicked cool gig, especially considering my journalism career is going nowhere fast these days. The exam is given three times a year, and on June 6, the closest location was at the University of Maine at Farmington.

So, I studied a lot, woke up early, and drove to Farmington, Maine. It was a really long drive just to sit a three-hour exam. But it was a bright, sunny and beautiful summer morning. And Maine is really gorgeous. Once I got off the expressway, I drove on two-lane highways through dense forrest which was punctuated with tiny towns and clear lakes.

The test was brutal. While I didn't make myself sick over it (like I did with the GRE), it was long and my essay was awful and I didn't know that FDR was the one who called the Allied powers the "Four Policemen." (I guessed Truman. MIZ-ZOU-RAH!) However, I think I passed. I'll find out in approximately three to five weeks.

I was also charmed by Farmington, ME. The University is small, but has adorable old buildings. There were tons of prospective students on campus. I had pineapple gelato with my lunch after my test at a lovely little sandwich shop down the street from the test center. I also found first editions of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at a used bookstore with the best name ever: Twice Told Tales.

I kept thinking that Farmington was simply crying out for a Missouri Photo Workshop. There were so many stories, just right there! It felt like a lot of deja-vu, which may be the universe's way of saying that all small towns are essentially alike in nature, whether they be in Missouri or Maine.

In short: I took a test. The test was in a nice town. I hope I passed. The end.

Hello, Michigan! Hello, Friends!

I was happily in my beloved hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan with my two dear friends Tara (who hosted) and Meg. Meg has the most photogenic hair in the world. It's just crazy-awesome-colorful-distincitive and is always interesting to look at.

I also decided to take it super-easy on the camera packing. I brought my Nikon Coolpix S3000 (the one that I saved after I dropped it in the Atlantic on it's first voyage) instead of my whole DSLR kit and kaboodle. I was happy not to be so weighed down for the weekend, but I think my results were less visually interesting. I just didn't try as hard to make good images with the point-and-shoot. And, the second I bumped up the ISO the image quality tanked-- which it true of my D60, but I feel I can compensate better with that camera.

But mostly, I had a fabulous time with my fabulous friends. Someday, we will all live much nearer to each other and not in a Michigan-Maine-Virginia travel triangle of death!

Washington, DC!

I went to our nation's capitol to see my hero Jon Stewart at his "Rally For Sanity" in October 2010. It's funny. I had my camera with me for two days at the rally and sightseeing in DC the next day, and the photos I want to share are of my friends, Tara and Meg. And this one really cool sculpture outside one of the Smithsonians. I did not know there was more than one Smithsonian.

We rode the moving sidewalks in this magic tunnel of light for about 30 minutes. Seriously.

August in Kentucky

During my brief interlude in Kentucky between Missouri and Maine, I embarked upon a small bit of tourism with my mom, and my aunt and uncle. Kentucky Horse Park has a very thorough (if nightmare-ishly lit) museum dedicated to the history of horse racing. It's got a lot of cool stuff. Like stuffed horses hanging from the ceiling!

And then, the JakeMonster hung out on the driveway while my mom packed my car. Let's face it, I was just there for moral support. She was the brains of the operation.

Oops.... and a Starfish!

I tried to have an adventure on a beautiful, sunny, 45℉ day here in Portland, Maine. I drove down to the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, and brought my new point-and-shoot camera. I was rocking out on the shore, splashing around in the waves (I was wearing galoshes) when I found a starfish! SO EXCITING! It was cute, and kinda clung to my finger.

When I was putting said starfish back in the ocean, my camera fell off my wrist and into the ocean. So, I quickly fished it out and rushed it to the grocery store, where I bought a bag of rice. My new birthday camera is now submerged in a bowl of uncooked rice in the vain hope that the rice will dry it out....

I just wanted to have an adventure, and I dropped my camera in the ocean. Fantastic.

P.S. -- I FIXED IT! THE RICE WORKED! I have a dry, functional and image-making point-and-shoot camera again! Victory is mine!

Boston Daytripper

Me and my disposable camera took an Amtrak train to BOSTON on the famed Boston-Maine line. If you've read a John Irving novel, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I met fellow MU J-grad (!!!!) Ivy Ashe at the Museum of Science, and we took the T (that would be the Boston subway) all over the city. Pizza, trains, bridges, sunglasses on a gray day... it was an amazing adventure!

I am loving living on the East Coast. Seriously.

The Fog

Meg Wiegand came to visit me in Portland! We did (and ate) everything one could do in a Portland weekend. One of many highlights was the Sunday afternoon trip to the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was cloudy, and the water was VERY cold, but a late lunch of lobster rolls was wonderful.

Someone built rock sculptures. They're cool.

Both of these images were made with a disposable camera. I bought two on a whim because they're small, light, durable and really simple to use. I didn't always get the best results, mostly because they don't focus very well, but they were fun to make pictures with.

On The Road

Check it: I drove over 1,000 miles over two days to get from Georgetown, Kentucky to Portland, Maine.

The rest stop where I had dinner in New York featured wi-fi and a sunset overlooking a lovely lake. Oh, and it was lovely and cool outside!

Construction on I-86 E in New York after dark. After being marooned on a detour in Cleveland, Ohio for three hours.... let's just say that I was desperate to get to my hotel!

After the hell that was Day One, I was really glad to see the very pretty countryside on I-88 E between Binghamton and Albany, New York.

I paid $3 to drive for 10 minutes in New Hampshire. I do not like toll roads. THIS WAS A VERY GOOD SIGN!

Moving To Maine

I'm moving to Portland, Maine, if you haven't heard. I've accepted an internship with the assignments division of Aurora Photos.

But first, I must leave Columbia, Missouri and the apartment that has been my home for 5 years. My mother called it "Shawshank" when I first moved in, because it looks like the half-way house Red and Brooks live in when they're on parole in Shawshank Redemption. I didn't care, and I still don't. I love this apartment.

The state of my living room around 1:15 a.m., five days before moving day.

My fridge is very empty and it's not cool, dude. Because, my fridge looked like this not too long ago:

I'm excited. I'm scared. And then there's the moments where I think, "Holy shit! I have a master's degree." Those are the best.

Students,

We've had some serious security problems in the Journalism buildings recently. Two things you need to know:

1. Propping open exterior doors to the Journalism complex is illegal and can lead to charges being filed against you for illegal entry. When the building is locked, that means all facilities are closed.

2. It has been called to my attention that the custodians have found people sleeping and/or working in the building when they arrive in the early morning. This is prohibited when the exterior doors are locked. If you propped open an external door or entered through one propped open, that does not excuse the fact that you are in the building illegally.

Effective immediately, MU Police will begin patrolling the complex to ensure compliance.

Thanks for your help in protecting our facilities and equipment.

The School of Journalism requires an extreme time commitment from students. The School of Journalism also requires students to use advanced software to complete assignments. Very few students, despite the "requirement" to own Mac laptops, actually can afford the full Adobe creative suite, audio editing software, and the video editing software needed to work on multimedia. Journalism assignments are, by nature, on deadline and time-sensitive.

Your belated revelation that students work late into the night in School of Journalism computer labs is not exactly news. And your reaction, to have MU Police patrol the buildings, is overkill. Students who want to work into the wee hours of the morning are not criminals--we pay tuition to use these facilities! If anything, you should be expanding hours so students can utilize the millions of dollars of computer equipment in a more time-effiecient manner. If you are going to be allocating MU Police to patrol Journalism buildings, perhaps the facilities should remain officially open.

Finals are coming up within the week, and adding the threat of confrontation with MU Police to an already stressful time is downright irresponsible.

In my six years with the School of Journalism, I have rarely been so annoyed. I have spent more nights, apparently trespassing illegally, working in computer labs than I care to count. This kind of time commitment and dedication is required for success in this school. Your policy is completely out-of-touch with the 24/7 work culture the School of Journalism has created.

Just what signal does a closed and locked building send to you. That it’s OK to enter? Would you do that at City Hall? At the State Capitol?

Do you know that homeless people are regularly entering and sleeping in our buildings because the students leave the doors propped open? Do you consider that good for your safety?

Do you know that your instructor can put you on a list of students to be given card-swipe access to the building that would solve this problem?

I suggest you start checking a few facts before sending impertinent emails about which you obviously know nothing.

I am not disputing the danger of propped-open doors. I do not prop open doors of the labs at night, and since I am a graduate teaching assistant, I have entry keys. Your policy has a loophole 100 miles wide. What about the majority of students, who enter buildings before the doors lock and stay late to work?

You are penalizing hard-working students. You are inflaming already-stressed students: final exams start in a week.

It has come to my attention that absolutely nobody understands the almost-two-year-old policy about access to Journalism buildings. You need to know this:

ANY student who has legitimate need to access the buildings is welcome to stay all night long in a semi-protected environment. To get access, here's how to do it: Ask your instructor to give your name and student number to my assistant, Pat Cloyd. A list of the whole class will suffice. Pat will immediately provide access in the computer. Then, you will need to visit the Key Shop at the Conley Avenue Garage to have your student ID activated.

Once that is done, you can enter the Journalism complex at any time of the day or night by simply swiping your ID card at one of three access points: The door between the old Sociology Building and the new RJI building, the door in the parking lot of Neff Annex or the door into the Fisher Auditorium lobby of Gannett Hall (Circle Drive side).

It has come to my attention that instructors have not informed students of this necessary procedure, which has been in effect since the new building opened. Our intent is NOT to prevent student access but to ensure their safety and the security of our buildings and equipment. In fact, not one single instructor has asked us to provide access to students, although all were notified about this repeatedly.

It is absolutely dangerous for someone to be in our buildings at 3 a.m. when doors are propped open allowing access to anyone. That's not safe for you, and it's not a secure option for our rooms and equipment.

So PLEASE understand that restricting your access is NOT the objective. The objective is to protect you, the buildings and our equipment. We just need to go through the proper procedures to make that happen.

I am sorry that you were not informed about this by your instructor(s). That should have happened. Because it did not happen, and because I did not know that, you got my earlier message today.

As a result, as soon as possible we will inform the MU PD to delay removal procedures until summer school begins. (I cannot guarantee that this message will be conveyed to the entire MUPD this weekend, but I will try to make that happen.) It is NOT our intent to inhibit your ability to do the work you need to do. We want you to be able to finish your final projects in the best way possible. In the meantime, please cooperate with us and do not leave doors propped open.

1. Chef Jon Chevalier slits the membrane on pork ribs to give the ribs more surface area, which then allows the ribs to absorb more flavor from the spice rub, at the Battle of the BBQ in Ashland, Mo. Sept. 12, 2009. Chevalier was a police sergeant in Ashland for many years, he now owns a resturant and catering business in Hartsburg, Mo.

2. Chevalier lifts charcoal for his second grill at the Battle of the BBQ. Chevalier specalizes in Memphis style BBQ pork ribs.

3. Chevalier places racks of pork ribs in his smoker grill. His smoker can hold up to 32 racks of ribs.

4. Mary-Lou Mayse and her daughter-in-law Jennifer Mayse bought two racks of ribs.

5. Chevalier prepares his pork ribs entry for the judges. He placed third in the BBQ chicken category, but did not win any awards for his ribs.

The Payne Family Graveyard

In my parent's subdivision in Georgetown, Kentucky, there is a small graveyard with gravestones dating from the 1800s. The subdivision and golf course sits on land that was once belonged to John Payne, a veteran of the Civil War. The graveyard is the final resting place for John Payne and a few generations of his ancestors.

I've been meaning to make photos of the graveyard for some time, but a new lens made it more exciting. I love my 50 mm f/1.8 lens! More photos can be seen at my flickr photostream.

In June I had a holiday in Holland, Michigan, home to my maternal Dutch ancestors. My mom and brother drove up from Kentucky, too. Holland is on the west side of Michigan, right on the beach. I had a lovely weekend visiting with family, turning myself into a lobster and enjoying the surf.

Home in Kentucky with the family, attending the JakeMonster's* little league baseball games, I decided to entertain myself with working on my shooting. Over 500 frames, and I really only like one of them (it's the top one, nice, clean, in focus). And it's not even of the JakeMonster (bottom). I find baseball to be an intelligible sport in the first place, which makes things even more difficult on my end. But, I have been informed that I need to improve my own technical photography abilities, and I shall do so come hell, high water, or little league baseball games.

*JakeMonster is Jake, my 8-year-old brother.

I'm a big fan of the New York Times. It's almost my only source of news- I read it online every day. But I have always had some issues with their audio-slideshows. they started to use reporter narration (which is a shortened version of the print story) of photos as the only audio, and I frankly think that's lazy. And then they tend to assign the interesting, hard news subjects to video or flash graphics while the audio slideshow is relegated to soft, fluffy and fashion- orientated subjects.
