Washington, DC!

I went to our nation's capitol to see my hero Jon Stewart at his "Rally For Sanity" in October 2010. It's funny. I had my camera with me for two days at the rally and sightseeing in DC the next day, and the photos I want to share are of my friends, Tara and Meg. And this one really cool sculpture outside one of the Smithsonians. I did not know there was more than one Smithsonian.

We rode the moving sidewalks in this magic tunnel of light for about 30 minutes. Seriously.

August in Kentucky

During my brief interlude in Kentucky between Missouri and Maine, I embarked upon a small bit of tourism with my mom, and my aunt and uncle. Kentucky Horse Park has a very thorough (if nightmare-ishly lit) museum dedicated to the history of horse racing. It's got a lot of cool stuff. Like stuffed horses hanging from the ceiling!

And then, the JakeMonster hung out on the driveway while my mom packed my car. Let's face it, I was just there for moral support. She was the brains of the operation.

Oops.... and a Starfish!

I tried to have an adventure on a beautiful, sunny, 45℉ day here in Portland, Maine. I drove down to the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, and brought my new point-and-shoot camera. I was rocking out on the shore, splashing around in the waves (I was wearing galoshes) when I found a starfish! SO EXCITING! It was cute, and kinda clung to my finger.

When I was putting said starfish back in the ocean, my camera fell off my wrist and into the ocean. So, I quickly fished it out and rushed it to the grocery store, where I bought a bag of rice. My new birthday camera is now submerged in a bowl of uncooked rice in the vain hope that the rice will dry it out....

I just wanted to have an adventure, and I dropped my camera in the ocean. Fantastic.

P.S. -- I FIXED IT! THE RICE WORKED! I have a dry, functional and image-making point-and-shoot camera again! Victory is mine!

He He

My brother the JakeMonster sleeps in our parents' bed with his beloved Blankie on Aug. 14, 2010, two weeks before his tenth birthday. JakeMonster has had his Blankie since he was born, and called it "He He" for years.

Boston Daytripper

Me and my disposable camera took an Amtrak train to BOSTON on the famed Boston-Maine line. If you've read a John Irving novel, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

I met fellow MU J-grad (!!!!) Ivy Ashe at the Museum of Science, and we took the T (that would be the Boston subway) all over the city. Pizza, trains, bridges, sunglasses on a gray day... it was an amazing adventure!

I am loving living on the East Coast. Seriously.

The Fog

The fog rolled in at Crescent Beach, Cape Elizabeth, Maine. I had never seen anything like this before. It was like a horror movie on the beach, but, you know, without the really scary stuff I don't like.

A Rocky Shoreline, Portland Head Light

Meg Wiegand came to visit me in Portland! We did (and ate) everything one could do in a Portland weekend. One of many highlights was the Sunday afternoon trip to the Portland Head Lighthouse. It was cloudy, and the water was VERY cold, but a late lunch of lobster rolls was wonderful.


Someone built rock sculptures. They're cool.

Both of these images were made with a disposable camera. I bought two on a whim because they're small, light, durable and really simple to use. I didn't always get the best results, mostly because they don't focus very well, but they were fun to make pictures with.

On The Road

Check it: I drove over 1,000 miles over two days to get from Georgetown, Kentucky to Portland, Maine.

The rest stop where I had dinner in New York featured wi-fi and a sunset overlooking a lovely lake. Oh, and it was lovely and cool outside!

Construction on I-86 E in New York after dark. After being marooned on a detour in Cleveland, Ohio for three hours.... let's just say that I was desperate to get to my hotel!

After the hell that was Day One, I was really glad to see the very pretty countryside on I-88 E between Binghamton and Albany, New York.

I paid $3 to drive for 10 minutes in New Hampshire. I do not like toll roads. THIS WAS A VERY GOOD SIGN!
